Ranking Methodology & Data Standards
How we calculate objective 100-point composite ratings for personal injury law firms. Purely public records, verified bar status, and Bayesian mathematics. No sponsored placements.
How We Produce Independent Rankings
PersonalInjuryLawyerHQ.com is founded on the conviction that legal directories should be built on verifiable facts, objective math, and complete editorial independence. Unlike legacy legal directories that allow law firms to buy top spots under "Featured" or "Premier" banners, our organic rankings cannot be purchased, sponsored, or influenced by advertising dollars.
Our ranking engine scores candidate personal injury law firms using a transparent 100-point composite formula evaluated against public records, verified state bar licensing boards, client feedback, and independent legal directory accreditations.
The 100-Point Scoring Model
Every firm in our database is scored across seven distinct criteria totaling 100 possible points:
| Evaluation Criterion | Max Points | Formula Logic & Verification Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Google Rating (Bayesian Adjusted) | 30 pts | Star ratings are adjusted using an empirical Bayesian formula ($m=25$, prior benchmark $C=4.7$). This prevents a firm with a 5.0 rating across 3 reviews from artificially outranking a battle-tested firm with a 4.8 rating across 400 verified client reviews. |
| Google Review Volume | 15 pts | Logarithmic scaling $\min(15, \frac{\log_{10}(v)}{\log_{10}(1000)} \times 15)$ rewards established track records of client volume while preventing extreme outliers from monopolizing the ranking. |
| Third-Party Legal Directories | 20 pts | Evaluates normalized standing across Avvo ratings (10.0 scale), Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent peer reviews, Super Lawyers listings, and active Justia profiles. |
| State Bar Standing & Discipline | 15 pts | Verified active licensing and good standing with the state bar association, points for years licensed, and a severe deduction (up to -20 pts) for public disciplinary sanctions. |
| Better Business Bureau (BBB) Standing | 5 pts | Evaluates verified BBB accreditation and letter grade (A+ / A) as an indicator of business dispute resolution and ethics. |
| Physical Office Verification & Profile Completeness | 5 pts | Firms must maintain a verifiable physical commercial office in or adjacent to the city. Virtual offices, PO boxes, and co-working mailbox drops are excluded. |
| NAP Consistency Across Public Registries | 10 pts | Algorithmic consistency checking of Name, Address, and Phone number across Google Places, state bar rosters, and legal directories. |
Data Collection & Verification Protocol
Our data collection process follows rigorous verification protocols designed to ensure high fidelity and compliance:
- No Review Scraping: We never copy individual consumer review text. We display only aggregate ratings and review counts, directing users to primary sources for individual reviews.
- Active Bar Lookups: We check licensing rosters for attorney status, admission dates, and public disciplinary actions.
- Quarterly Verification Cycles: Listings display a "Last Verified" date. Listings older than 90 days are automatically flagged for review.
- Strict Disqualification: Firms with permanently suspended bar licenses, disbarred principals, or virtual office addresses without physical presence are disqualified.
